Are there any comfy, classic 4x4s that come to Oppo’s collective mind other than the Jeep Wagoneer and Range Rover Classic?

Define “classic”

The Wagoneer kinda created the concept of a comfy 4x4, everything else at the time was very utilitarian and non-passenger-oriented. Aside from the two you listed, mainstream SUVs didn’t start getting comfy until I wanna say the first Explorer came out.

Somewhat old with a sense of nostalgia.

land cruiser 60 or 62

That’s kind of unfortunate.
I couldn’t really think of any besides the Wagoneer and RRC.
My Wagoneer is a royal heap o’ crap, but I like the 4wd, the looks, and the way it rides—I was curious about what else is out there.

AMC Eagle Wagon?
International Scout?

LAFORZA.

Excellent Suggestion.

461 g wagon were coil sprung for a long time no 62 series land cruisers aren’t too bad. The more wheelbase the better.

So not the Elephant?

Scouts are not comfortable, haha. They are cool though and very capable off road.
I’m not sure how good the Eagle Wagon is off road, but its probably fairly comfy since it was marketed as a passenger car.

K5 Blazer and the square body suburban.

Monteverdi Safari.
Google that one.

I don’t have to Google it. I already know what it is.
Too bad I’ll probably never see one in real life.

Suburban is a good choice, it has wheelbase to soak up bumps.
The Blazer is pretty tolerable in terms of ride.
Both fit the bill pretty well.

Up until the 70’s, SUVS were literally pickups with a roof slapped over the rear and some bench seats shoved in there. I think your best option besides a GW or RR would be a classic Suburban or International Harvester Travelall.

80s Suburban conversions. I had a Trailmaster, but there were tons of shops that did them.

I’m not really sure it would be comfy anyway.
Just because it has leathery stuff on the inside, it probably still rides like a scout.

A K5 with the quad shock setup can ride pretty well too.

The trailmasters were pretty awesome. Forgot completely about them.
![]() 04/18/2015 at 22:59 |

I always liked the Travelall.
NP205 and danas in a big box with three bench seats. How can you go wrong?

This is the obvious answer.

I second the AMC Eagle Wagon.

Eagles are shockingly capable off road.

Good luck finding one today. They’ve all gone to Mexico. Apparently there’s a huge market down there for old ‘burbs that have been spiffed up.
![]() 04/18/2015 at 23:11 |

I’m glad to hear that.
![]() 04/18/2015 at 23:16 |

I had no idea such a market would have existed.
I love old burbs though.

Any classic Suburban would definitely be my choice. The 8th Gen is by far my favorite, but all old ‘Burbs are pretty darn cool.

Also (less on point):
No 4WD, but more capable offroad, and way better ride, than many modern SUVs

DOGE!!!
HOW DA GT-R?

I would have to say that, while I know its not classic, an old early 1st-3rd gen ford explorer or mercury mountaineer, I DD a mercury mountaineer, and I have to say, its pretty roomy and comfortable. (plus air-conditioning that works is always great).

Well, the Blazer Chalet has all the comforts of a 1970s home...

There was supposed to be a pic there too.. Mobile Kinja seems to have grounded me from that feature for now..

I love stuff like that. Freaking awesome.

The Wagoneers were handsome cars, no two ways about it. I owned a Cherokee, L6, 5SP, 2-door. Shoebox on leaf springs and solid axles. It was a fun experiment.
![]() 05/13/2015 at 11:29 |

The looks. Jeep had them then.

It was a bromance.

I came across pictures of the Cherokee I used to own. I couldn’t even tell you what year it was. I bought it in San Diego and in 1991 it had 265,000 miles on it.
![]() 05/17/2015 at 14:28 |

Looks fantastic for that mileage.
My Wagoneer is absolutely rotten and it has just a little over 100k
The muscle grill looks a hell of a lot better than my pig nose grill
![]() 05/17/2015 at 17:44 |

That was 265k miles in 1991. All highway miles. San Diego is an immense county.
I have zero recollection what model year that car was.
